Adult Traditional Willow Basketry Classes 2008

Bonnie Gale is available in 2008 to teach the following half, one and two day courses
in traditional willow basketry and living willow and rustic structures.

Bonnie Gale has been a traditional willow basketmaker for the past 24 years. She has
two degrees in City Planning and is engaged in many forms of spatial three-dimensional
design. In the past 4 years, she has started to build living willow structures (living baskets on a
larger scale) as well as specialized design pieces. Her work has appeared in HOUSE AND
GARDEN magazine (March 2006) and VOGUE LIVING (Fall/ Winter 2006). Her work is exhibited nationally and she is the recipient of a great number of awards, including a NYFA Artist's Fellowship in 1999.

LOCAL CLASSES IN 2008
In 2008, Bonnie will teach on the small group tutorial basis in Guilford, New York on the
following weekends:

MARCH 1-2; APRIL 26-27; MAY 17-18 and JUNE 21-22

Students can choose to make whatever they wish. The tuition rate is $75 per day and
materials are an extra cost. To secure your place in a class, please send a 50% tuition deposit
(for example, the deposit would be $75 on a two day class), check payable to “Bonnie
Gale” to the address listed on the cover. Inexpensive local accommodation is available.

"EARLY AMERICAN LIFE" LUNCH BASKET

LEVEL:                      Beginning

LENGTH:                   8 hours = 1 - 1 1/2 day

MATERIALS FEE:   $34

A simple round basket made of cultivated brown willows. The basket has flared sides, attractive double border and wrapped handle. The base is paired and there are sets of French randing in the siding. The instructions to make this basket were featured in the October 1992 issue of "Early American Life" magazine. This basket is an easy and excellent beginning willow workshop. The dimensions of the basket are 11 1/2 inches diameter at the top by 6 3/4 inches high (without handle).

SCIOB/IRISH POTATO STRAINING BASKET*

LEVEL:                    Beginning

LENGTH:                 6-8 hours (1 day)

MATERIALS FEE:  $38

An Irish willow basket made for straining potatoes, resulting in a most unique round bottom design. Students will make the bottom slath and special weave, insert stakes, do short siding in waling and a simple border. Different colored homegrown willows will be used in season.

BUSHEL BASKET

LEVEL:                    Beginning/All levels

LENGTH:                 2 days

MATERIALS FEE:  $72

This classic willow basket is suitable for all levels of students. Beginners will learn basic round willow techniques, while more advanced students can hone their control, shaping and roping skills. A medium-sized round base (13 inches) is woven in pairing and then staked up with rows of bottom waling. The French randing siding is completed with top waling and a large rod border. Two roped handles finish the basket and there is an optional removable foot.

WALL BASKET

LEVEL:                    Beginning

LENGTH:                 6-8 hours = 1 day

MATERIALS FEE:  $35

This workshop involves the making of a rectangular wall basket in buff willow, which is great for holding mail or flowers. The square base will be made in a screwblock. The sides will be woven in randing and finished with a rod border. A hole will be left in the back for attaching the basket to a wall. The basket is 6 inches wide by 9 inches long, with an overall height of 8 inches.

SCIATHOG/IRISH POTATO STRAINING BASKET*

LEVEL:                     All levels

LENGTH:                  6 hours = 1 day

MATERIALS FEE:  $42

A classic Irish frame willow basket for straining boiled potatoes. Pre-carved and dried rims will be provided. Students will carve ribs and weave with different colored homegrown basket willows. This basket is 13 inches in diameter and is nice for holding fruit.

SPOON BASKET*

LEVEL:                    Beginning/All levels

LENGTH:                 3-4 hours = 1/2 day

MATERIALS FEE:  $22

This workshop involves the making of an attractive spoon basket, using a mold. From a simple slath, the basket is woven in randing, ending with a simple trac border and roped handle. The basket has a 4 inch top diameter and is approximately 8 inches tall. Different colored willows will be used for design variations.

FRENCH CHEESE BASKET

LEVEL:                    Beginning/All levels

LENGTH:                 1 day

MATERIALS FEE:  $55

A classic cheese basket  using a tension base; scallomed stakes; French slewed sides and a rod border.  A separate lid is made similar to the base and is attached to the basket with two hinges.  The size is 9 inches in diameter by 5 inches in height.  This basket is woven in peeled willow.

SKEINED WILLOW BRACELET

LEVEL:                    Beginning/All levels

LENGTH:                 4 hours

MATERIALS FEE:  $30

A very attractive bracelet woven with skeins (thin, even width strips of willow). Students will be provided with a white ash splint core and prepared willow skeins. The core will be individually fitted and then wrapped with skeins. A variety of skein designs will be explored.

SKEINED WILLOW EARRINGS

LEVEL:                    Beginning/All levels

LENGTH:                 3-4 hours

MATERIALS FEE:  $30

A very attractive pair of earrings woven with skeins (thin, even width strips of willow). Students will be provided with prepared white ash splint cores and prepared willow skeins. The cores will be wrapped with skeins in a variety of skeins and colors.   French hook wires will be provided.

ENGLISH HOOP POT TRELLIS

LEVEL:                    Beginning/All levels

LENGTH:                 3-4 hours = 1/2 day

MATERIALS FEE:  $28

Hoop trellises, which originated in English gardens, are made from willow rods and lend themselves to formal and informal garden settings.  They can also be adapted to large and small pots.  In this workshop, students will be provided with a pot and soil and will weave a hoop trellis within the confines of the pot.

RUSTIC MIRROR

LEVEL:                    Beginning/All levels

LENGTH:                 3-4 hours = 1/2 day

The Adirondack Camp movement left a legacy of rustic furniture and accoutrements.  In this workshop, students will make a small rustic mirror in the Adirondack style.  Wooden base and mirror glass will be provided and students will use willow and birch rods, birch bark and other materials to adorn and decorate the mirror.

WILLOW LANTERN

LEVEL:                    Beginning/All levels

LENGTH:                 3-4 hours = 1/2 day

In Europe, willow lanterns, in the form of processional and community objects, have been popular for centuries and are undergoing a resurgence.  In this workshop, students will use willow rods to make a frame and then it will be covered with paper.  A device for holding a light will be provided..

SPIRAL PLANT SUPPPORT

LEVEL:                    Beginning/All levels

LENGTH:                 3-4 hours = 1/2 day

MATERIALS FEE:  $28

Students will be provided with a large willow stick and undyed reed.  Students will drill the stick (or accept pre-drilled) and dip-dye the reed to preference.  The reed will be woven through the stick in spiralling hoops.  Beads cover the ends of the reed.  Students will be provided with a pot, soil and plants for their spiral support..

CROCANE/FRENCH OVAL ARM BASKET

LEVEL:                     Intermediate

LENGTH:                 2 days

MATERIALS FEE:  $48

The Crocane is a classic French oval arm basket, made of buff willow. It is an intermediate level basket and special techniques to be taught include: oval split-stick base woven in French randing; chase upsetting; French randing in the siding with some doubling; 5- or 6-rod border; and double wrapped handle. There is an optional foot on the bottom of the basket, depending on time. Size: top is 14 inches by 19 inches by 13 inches with handle.

WILLOW BABY RATTLE

LEVEL:                    All levels

LENGTH:                 1-2 hours

MATERIALS FEE:  $12

Come and make this enjoyable baby rattle (great for gifts!) using seven willows (representing the seven virtues) and containing seven pebbles (representing the seven deadly sins). The virtues contain and balance the sins, hence bringing good luck! All materials are supplies in the fee.

WILLOW BACKPACK

LEVEL:                     Intermediate

LENGTH:                 2 days

MATERIALS FEE:  $88 (includes cloth straps)

A full-size traditional backpack basket made of brown willows. A large split-stick oval base is staked up, followed by waling, randing, top waling and a large border. A roped handle on the back is optional. The basket is not made on a mold, so the workshop will concentrate on shaping. Custom cloth straps are included in the Materials Fee. The dimensions of the basket are 12 inches wide by 18 inches long by 15 inches high (without handle).
Prior willow experience is essential.

SEWING BASKET

LEVEL:                     Intermediate

LENGTH:                 6-8 hours (1 day)

MATERIALS FEE:  $38

A traditional Liverpool, New York willow basket made of buff willow. The base is woven in French randing. The base is staked up and then a foot wale is woven which becomes the French randed siding. The basket is finished with a plaited border. Pieces of willow are then inserted into the border to act as posts for spools of thread. A wrapped handle completes the basket. Students should be familiar with French randing, as the base and siding are woven in this technique. The basket has a 12 inch diameter and 91/2 inch height with the handle.

WILLOW PURSE BASKET

LEVEL:                     Intermediate

LENGTH:                 1 day

MATERIALS FEE:  $44

A small rectangular purse basket made of white willow with a wrapped handle. The square base will be made in a screwblock. Stakes are inserted followed by siding and an attractive square border. The basket is 9 inches by 5 inches with a height of 5 inches prior to the handle.



 
 

POLISH ARM BASKET

LEVEL:                    Intermediate

LENGTH:                 2 days

MATERIALS FEE:  $65

Using a special mold and a combination of buff and white peeled willow, students will make this Polish Arm basket by weaving an oval base; attaching it to the mold; staking up; siding with special plaited border techniques and finishing with a substantial wrapped handle.  The basket is 16 inches by 12 inches with a height of 15 inches.



 
 

ZIG-ZAG OVAL ARM BASKET

LEVEL:                    Intermediate

LENGTH:                 2 days

MATERIALS FEE:  $65

This basket has an oval base which is attached to a special mold.  After slyping, attaching stakes and wailing, the siding is in a special zig-zag weave using two weavers together.  A rod border and a wrapped handle complete the basket.  The dimensions of this basket are 15 inches by 12 inches with a height of 14 inches.

FIRESIDE LOG BASKET

LEVEL:                     Intermediate

LENGTH:                 2 days

MATERIALS FEE:  $68

A large round basket, made of brown willow with attractive change of shape in the siding, double border and wrapped handle, suitable for holding logs. A round base is staked up, followed by French randing and slewing in the siding. The diameter at the top of the basket is 15 inches and has a total height of 18 inches with the handle.

LAUNDRY BASKET

LEVEL:                     Intermediate

LENGTH:                 2 days

MATERIALS FEE:  $68

A large oval buff laundry basket with flared sides and two roped handles. The oval base is made in the English manner with base sticks under foot and whole rods. After the bottom waling, there are sets of English randing weave followed by top waling and a large rod border. This is a classic willow basket, which is 29 inches long and 19 inches wide at the border and 10 inches tall.

ENGLISH SQUARE SHOPPING BASKET

LEVEL:                     Intermediate

LENGTH:                 2 days

MATERIALS FEE:  $63

A classic rectangular or "square" English shopping basket with flared long sides made of unpeeled willow with a strong carrying handle. Students will weave the base in a screwblock. The sides are woven in English slewing. Waling, packing and the border will also be taught. The base is 8 inches by 12 inches and the basket is 12 inches tall at the top of the handle.

LETTER TRAY

LEVEL:                     Intermediate /Advanced

A large square basket (101/2 inches wide by 161/2 inches long) with short sides (5 inches) and front opening for use as a letter tray. The base will be made in a screwblock and then stakes added, followed by waling, simple randing, use of corner posts and special border techniques.

CASSEROLE CARRIER

LEVEL:                     Intermediate/Advanced

LENGTH:                 2 days

MATERIALS FEE:  $55

A large rectangular basket with short sides made of white willow, suitable for carrying a casserole dish to a potluck. The base is made in a screwblock. The stakes are inserted, followed by randing weave in the siding and a large square border. A high wrapped handle completes this basket. The basket is 14 inches by 9 inches with a height of 4 inches, prior to the handle.

LIDDED LUNCHEON BASKET

LEVEL:                    Advanced

A very attractive small square basket with straight sides, domed lid, handle and special front fastenings and hinges. The base will be made in a screwblock; corner posts and scallomed stakes are inserted; walings, randing and square border taught. The basket is 9 inches by 5 inches with a 7 inch height.

WILLOW FISHING CREEL/POCKETBOOK CREEL

LEVEL:                     Intermediate/Advanced

LENGTH:                 2 days

MATERIALS FEE:  $95 (includes 3-part leather/brass harness made by Bonnie Gale and use of special mold)

One of the most classic willow baskets--the willow fishing creel, complete with lid and 3-part leather/brass harness. The creel is made of buff willow, measuring 10 inches long by 7 inches high wide and 9 inches tall. The base is "D" shaped using scallomed stakes and randing weave. The base is screwed onto a special mold. The sides are woven in French randing and packing at the top allows for shape and strap holes. The lid is made to fit the basket, with a hole for fish. Special fastenings and hinges will also be taught. Students have the option to use the basket as a pocketbook creel purse, or to make a hole in the lid for use as a fishing creel.


NOTES ON BASKET WORKSHOPS:

Intermediate level means that students should have had some prior willow experience in order to achieve maximum benefit.

* The Spoon, Sciathog and Sciob baskets are nice made with fresh dormant homegrown colored willows from October to May. At other times, the baskets will be made with brown, white or buff willows (dried and resoaked).
